What is reader moderation actually costing you today?

Manual moderation is the silent cost most newsrooms forget to add to their P&L. Adjust the sliders to your reality, the math updates below. Hypothesis: Logora's AI absorbs 85% of the toxicity flow before a human ever sees it, measured on Der Spiegel.

Assumption: 2 minutes of human review per comment on average. 250 publishing days per year. Logora auto-moderates 85%, your team only reviews the flagged 15%.

Comments to moderate per year 187,500
Annual cost, fully manual moderation 312,500 €
Annual cost, with Logora AI (15% human review) 46,875 €
Net moderation cost absorbed by Logora 265,625 €

Plus a retention upside: 21% of Der Spiegel subscribers cite debates as a reason they stay subscribed. On a 50K-subscriber base at €80 ARPU, even a 3-point retention gain returns 120,000 € in saved revenue per year.

Build or buy

Build it in-house, or buy what already works?

Some newsrooms consider building their own comment + moderation stack. Here is the honest trade-off, side by side.

Building it yourself

12 to 18 months. A team. A roadmap that's not yours.

  • 2-3 FTE full-stack engineers for 12-18 months. ML engineer to train moderation. Range: 400-600 k€ in salaries alone.
  • Compliance work DSA-ready transparency reports, GDPR processor agreements, content moderation appeal flows. Legal review every quarter.
  • Infra & ML EU hosting, moderation model trained on your dataset only (no cross-publisher signal), continuous tuning.
  • No proof unknown retention impact until launch +12 months. No A/B benchmark against another newsroom.
  • Maintenance forever. Bugs, browser updates, abuse patterns, new modules, GDPR/DSA changes, your roadmap is now an internal product.

With Logora

1.5 days from snippet to live, on a product the leaders already use.

  • 1.5 days JS + SSO snippet to live debates on your domain. Same setup we shipped at Der Spiegel.
  • 85% auto AI moderation trained on 1M+ comments across European newsrooms. Your team only reviews the flagged 15%.
  • DSA + GDPR ready by default. EU hosting on OVH, France. Transparency reports auto-generated. Data never leaves the EU.
  • Cross-publisher learning moderation signals, abuse patterns, debate formats refined by Der Spiegel, Bild, Milenio, Estadão, Ouest-France. You inherit it on day one.
  • Proven outcomes 21% Der Spiegel subscriber retention attributed to debates. +10k subscribers in 7 hours at launch. Measurable, not promised.

What premium publishers ask us

The conversations we have before signing.

Five questions we hear in every call with a quality publisher. Honest answers from our last 18 months of pilots.

  • "Won't comments import the toxicity we see on social platforms?"

Two reasons it doesn't happen. One, on subscriber-only and paywalled environments, your audience is self-selecting, people who pay for journalism rarely show up to vent. Two, our moderation engine handles 85% of the flow automatically, and we keep a 15% human review specifically because pure-AI moderation still feels unsafe to most newsrooms. Toxicity goes down, not up, when conversation is structured.

  • "Can we keep editorial control? We don't want a generic forum running parallel to the newsroom."

That is the entire point. Debates are created by your editorial team, framed around your articles. Journalists can intervene with named or branded avatars, surface arguments inside articles, recommend top comments, and pull reader insights back into newsroom briefs. The community becomes a feedback loop, not a parallel universe.

  • "What does a low-risk pilot actually look like?"

We open a debate space, gated to a small subscriber circle of your choice, usually 500 to 5,000 users, often anchored to a single newsletter or topic. Free for the first one or two months. You measure engagement, retention, moderation load, and journalist sentiment, then decide whether to roll it out site-wide. Setup is ~2 hours of your tech team, then we handle the rest.

Common questions

Everything else you'd actually ask.

  • Do we own the data?

You own 100% of the data. Readers who participate are registered in your database. Logora acts as a data sub-processor under GDPR to enrich participation data (arguments, votes, interests, points), which is your property.

  • How does moderation work?

We trained a moderation algorithm on 1M+ contributions, working in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and beyond. 85% of contributions are processed automatically. The rest is queued for your team. Authors see their pending contributions as published to avoid frustration. Our team can moderate on your behalf if you prefer. Other engines (Netino, Perspective, Bodyguard) plug in easily.

  • What happens if we go over the traffic limit?

Everything keeps running normally. If your site takes off, we'll reach out to align the contract at renewal, no service interruption.

  • Are we managing the ads?

You have complete control over advertising. Installing Logora lets you monetise new pages by inserting your own advertising identifiers from the admin. Display conditions (subscriber-only, etc.) are configurable.

  • Can we ask for specific developments?

All text and CSS (colours, fonts, shadows) is already customisable free of charge from your admin space. For deeper specific developments we offer day-rate packages at €450 excl. tax per day, which can sit outside the subscription if you only need development at a specific time.

  • Can we negotiate the price?

Yes, fair negotiators welcome. We can shift to a more hybrid model, reducing the fixed cost and sharing the new advertising revenue your team generates on the contributory space. A longer commitment can also lower the price. Associations and organisations defending democracy can contact us directly.

  • What if we have more questions?

We'll be delighted to help. Book an appointment or send us a message.
